You might have already heard that March is awareness month for several cancers ? ovarian cancer, prostate cancer and brain tumours. With that in mind, Libby, who edits the cancer information section of our website, has written this guest blog to give you some of the key facts.

Knowing the facts about cancer can save lives, help us to make decisions, and make it easier for us all to understand what others are going through.

This month, we?d like to help you find the answers to questions about prostate cancer, ovarian cancer and brain tumours.? Here are some quick facts but there?s much more about symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and living with cancer in our cancer information.

Prostate cancer

  • Prostate cancer generally affects men over 50, and is rarely found in younger men.
    It is the commonest type of cancer in men.
  • Around 37,000 men in the UK are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year.
  • Most prostate cancers grow extremely slowly and, particularly in elderly men, will never cause any problems.

?Ovarian cancer

  • Ovarian cancer is the fifth most common cancer in women in the UK.
  • It usually affects women who have reached their menopause ? about 85% of women diagnosed are over the age of 50, though it can occur in younger women.
  • Most women with ovarian cancer are treated with a combination of surgery and chemotherapy.

Brain tumours

  • Brain tumours are relatively rare in the UK.
  • There are lots of different types of brain tumour, depending on where in the brain they start.
  • They can be either cancerous (malignant) or benign (non-cancerous).
    Most brain tumours are treated with surgery and radiotherapy.
