Minecraft creator blasts Windows 8

Markus Persson is definitely not amused

Minecraft

The creator of Minecraft has come out and attacked Microsoft over Windows 8, and the fact that it isn?t an open platform.

Markus Persson (aka Notch), the mastermind behind the cult hit world-building game Minecraft, was unamused by an email he received from the Redmond-based software giant.

He tweeted: ?Got an email from microsoft, wanting to help ?certify? minecraft for win 8. I told them to stop trying to ruin the pc as an open platform.?

He then followed that up with: ?I?d rather have minecraft not run on win 8 at all than to play along. Maybe we can convince a few people not to switch to win 8 that way.?

Sounds like fighting talk, indeed.

And it got a predictably mixed reaction from the denizens of the internet, with some applauding, and some getting cross about the prospect of not being able to play Minecraft on Windows 8.

Later still, Persson tweeted: ?And oh WOW the internet is upset about my win8 statement!?

There are plenty of Minecraft fans out there ? indeed it has shifted over six million copies on the PC, and in excess of nine million across all platforms (it?s also out on the Xbox, iOS and Android).

Persson isn?t the first person to get twitchy about Microsoft?s stance on Windows 8 gaming, as earlier this year Valve famously fired off a barrage of criticism at the OS ? labelling it a ?catastrophe? for PC gaming, no less.

And the company is now looking at its options with Linux, pushing forward with a version of Steam for Linux.

Cassidy: Apple's Woz is headed for Australia -- eventually

Click photo to enlarge

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak says he wants to live Down Under. (Photo by Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images for VES)

The thing you have to know about Woz is that you just never know about Woz.

Yes, Apple (AAPL) co-founder Steve Wozniak is planning to become an Australian citizen and move to Australia. Or New Zealand. Eventually.

"I think it's sort of a neat idea," he said when I reached him Thursday.

Sure. Neat. Move to the other side of the world. Live in an up-until-now-foreign country. Why not?

But that's the thing about Woz and that's why he's come to personify the heart and soul of Silicon Valley. His mind is brilliantly analytical when it comes to technology. Think Apple 1 and Apple II. And yet, when it comes to living, he can still look at life with wonder and amusement.

"It's like a whole new second chance for me to learn about another country's history, to become rooters for their teams," Woz said. "It's sort of fun."

And hey, once you've done "Dancing with the Stars," you can pretty much do anything.

The thing is, Woz told me, he's always liked Australia. The people are nice. It seems a place far away, he said, from the hustle and bustle and the tensions and worries of the United States. (Even if it must have the hustle and bustle and the tensions and worries of Australia.)

Yes, Woz's (eventual) move is the perfect Internet story and it took the Internet

by storm. And while Woz is a big believer in the Internet (surprise), he had to chuckle at reports that he was moving to take advantage of Australia's superior broadband service (not that he doesn't think the superior broadband down under is swell).

Of course, that's not the reason. Everybody knows Woz and his wife, Janet, are moving to Australia because it's a day earlier there, which means Apple products are released there hours before the doors open to the Apple stores in California.

OK, that's not really the reason they're moving but it's a nice perk.

"Australians get things like the newest iPhone, they get them first in the world. I beat California by 17 hours this year," said Woz, who picked up his iPhone 5 while in the country on business and to file the first batch of paperwork to be granted an Australian resident visa.

Ah, paperwork. This is a bit of a process, and Woz said he's in it for the long haul. He said it could take several years to cross all the t's, dot all the i's and carry out various requirements. Once he obtains citizenship, he might choose to live in New Zealand, he says, because it's pleasant and accepts Australian citizens. But really, he said, it's a little early to be nailing down all the details.

A few things, meantime, won't change. He'll continue working for Fusion-io, where he is chief scientist. He wants to keep his U.S. citizenship. And he plans to be a regular in Silicon Valley no matter what country he calls home.

"I actually love my house in California," he said. "I hope that I can keep the house I have now, or at least a house in California, always."

And for Woz fans, who are legion, that may be the best news of all.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Republican vice-presidential nominee Paul Ryan is telling a national sportsmen group that he and Mitt Romney would work to prevent any more restrictions on hunting and gun ownership.

Speaking to around 1,000 members of the the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance at a rally on Saturday night, Ryan said he will fight any more restrictions to public lands access for hunters.

The Wisconsin congressman, a hunting enthusiast, says he will also fight encroachments on individual's right to bear arms.

Ryan's speech brought him back to Ohio after campaigning earlier this week in Lima, Cincinnati and the Dayton area. He spoke earlier in the day to supporters in another swing state, New Hampshire.

Celebrate the official opening of the Belle Isle Bike Skills Area ? Hills ...

    Lots of folks worked very hard to make this happen and it is so nice to see a project actually be completed instead of simply talked about over and over. From the Press Release;

The City?s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities will open its new Belle Isle Bike Skills Area on Saturday, September 29, at 10 a.m. with a celebration that will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, demonstrations, and tours. The public is invited to attend and to bring their bicycles to try out the mountain bike training area.

?I encourage residents and visitors to come discover the Belle Isle Bike Skills Training Area as it is another step Richmond is taking to create bike-friendly, outdoor tourist attractions, as we prepare for the UCI Road World Cycling Championships in 2015,? comments Mayor Dwight C. Jones. ?The benefits of cycling are tremendous to our city in many ways, including our efforts to encourage city residents to get active and adopt a healthy lifestyle.?

The new training area is located within the James River Park on Belle Isle across from the Tredegar Street suspension bridge. It includes a beginner and expert pump track, rock gardens, and log and rock skinnies in addition to other features. Bicyclists can learn to handle these obstacles and challenges, which they will find on the trails throughout the James River Park, in a controlled environment.

?This site, which has been built largely with the labor of volunteers who love mountain biking, will provide a place to learn and practice mountain biking skills and introduce the fun of mountain biking as a recreational activity to a much larger audience,? said Dr. Norman C. Merrifield, director of the department.

In addition, while this new facility provides ?off-road? training, the city also has plans to add an ?on-road? training component on Belle Isle adjacent to this site. The on-road training facility will provide a place for children and adults to become competent bicyclists, as well as learn and practice the skills needed to ride safely in an urban environment.

?The James River Park is already known throughout the East coast and internationally for its outstanding network of urban mountain biking trails. Now with the addition of this skills area Richmond has enhanced its reputation as a ?bike city,?? said Jakob Helmoldt, the city?s bicycle, pedestrian and trails coordinator.

Organizations that provided volunteers who helped construct the new training site, as well as in-kind donations, include the Friends of the James River Park, the James River Outdoor Coalition, the Richmond Mid-Atlantic Off-Road Enthusiasts, the International Mountain Biking Association, Virginia Bicycling Federation, Hands-On Greater Richmond, SportsBackers, Altria, Luck Stone, Tektonics Design Group, Sattler Creative, Alpine Trails, Dreaming Creek, and Green Side Up Landscaping.

The Belle Isle Skills Area is free to use and is open from sunrise to sunset. For more information, call (804) 646-5733 or visit?www.RichmondGov.com/Parks.

Travel Insurance Advice for Snowbirds | Squaremouth Pressroom

ST. PETERSBURG, FL September 26, 2012 ? With cooler weather approaching, many snowbirds are preparing to travel south for the winter months. In preparation for such long-term travel, healthcare is often a primary consideration. According to travel insurance comparison site, Squaremouth, purchasing travel insurance plans can provide coverage options for seasonal residents if primary health insurance is unavailable while on vacation.

Some may assume they have adequate coverage through their primary health insurance providers and consider travel insurance an unnecessary expense. However, many health insurance policies provide limited coverage to travelers. For example, provincial medical service plans in Canada may offer little to no coverage outside of the country. Similarly, U.S. citizens traveling to other parts of the country often face limited coverage or increased ?out-of-network? costs.

This is especially true for travelers with pre-existing conditions. Many carriers provide pre-existing medical coverage if the policy is purchased within 10-30 days of the initial trip deposit. ?Some providers, such as HTH Worldwide, include policies that offer this coverage as long as it is purchased before the final payment date.

If required, many travel insurance providers can arrange emergency medical evacuation to an appropriate facility. Repatriation benefits will cover associated costs if returning home is medically necessary. In the unfortunate event of death, remains may also be repatriated.

?Since emergency medical evacuation can be extremely expensive, this benefit can protect travelers from potential financial burdens,? says Chris Harvey, CEO of Squaremouth. ?We recommend that travelers carry $50,000 to $100,000 in medical evacuation coverage when traveling internationally.?

There are additional benefits in many travel insurance policies that travelers may not realize. All policies come with a 24-hour hotline providing travelers with a broad range of services, including medical referrals, legal assistance, emergency cash transfers, and help with pre-trip arrangements.

To make long-term vacationing easier, Squaremouth recommends that travelers fill all prescriptions and make copies of important documents before leaving home. When purchasing travel insurance, travelers should read policy details to understand terms of coverage. Of equal importance, they should first check with any health insurance providers to gain an understanding of coverage they may already have to avoid an unnecessary purchase of travel insurance.

Libya: Embassy attack had nothing to do with anti-Islam film

Libyan President Mohammed Magarief said the controversial film that mocked Islam's Prophet Muhammad and ignited protests throughout the Muslim world had "nothing to do" with the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, and that he has "no doubt" it was an act of terrorism.

"It's a preplanned act of terrorism directed at American citizens," Magarief told NBC's Ann Curry in an interview that aired Wednesday. "Reaction should have been, if it was genuine, should have been six months earlier. So it was postponed until the 11th of September. They chose this date, 11th of September, to carry a certain message."

Magareif said the "high degree of accuracy" in which the attack was executed?with rocket-propelled grenades and mortar shells?is proof that the assault was preplanned, and not carried out by inexperienced protesters. He said he believes "al-Qaida elements" were involved but stopped short of directly accusing the terrorist group of planning it.

Christopher Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya, was among those killed in the attack, but Magareif said he did not know if Stevens was specifically targeted.

The Libyan leader said more than 40 people have been questioned in connection with the killings, but that it is too early to reveal the details of the ongoing investigation.

[Related: Obama: Libya attack 'wasn't just a mob action']

Magarief's comments came a day after President Barack Obama said the attack was more than mob violence, but stopped short of explicitly labeling the assault as an act of terrorism.

"There's no doubt that the kind of weapons that were used, the ongoing assault, that it wasn't just a mob action," the president said in an appearance on "The View."

On Tuesday, he denounced the anti-Islam video in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly, calling the film "crude and disgusting."

Obama told world leaders that he could not simply ban it and scolded those who denounce anti-Muslim speech but stay quiet when the target is Christianity.

"The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam. But to be credible, those who condemn that slander must also condemn the hate we see in the images of Jesus Christ that are desecrated, churches are destroyed or the Holocaust is denied," Obama said, in an apparent reference to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Audit faults screening used for Mamtek incentives

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Missouri's economic development agency could have done a better job of screening applicants for business incentives, and the state could have saved millions of dollars if it had tightened guidelines for tax credits, the state auditor said Tuesday.

A report released by Auditor Tom Schweich concludes that the Department of Economic Development, the city of Moberly and private entities were not diligent enough in reviewing Mamtek U.S. before authorizing incentives for the company to build an artificial sweetener facility projected to employ more than 600 people. A legislative committee reached a similar conclusion earlier this year, though the state agency has defended its review process.

Construction of the sucralose factory halted one year ago after Mamtek failed to make a payment toward $39 million of bonds issued in 2010 by Moberly's development agency. The state had offered additional incentives of up to $17 million, but they never were paid because Mamtek didn't trigger their criteria before failing.

Since then, Attorney General Chris Koster filed theft and fraud charges against Mamtek CEO Bruce Cole; the federal Securities and Exchange Commission brought a civil suit seeking financial penalties against Cole; Moberly's credit rating was downgraded; bankruptcy proceedings were initiated against Mamtek and its assets are to be auctioned off Oct. 24.

The audit cites various ways in which state and local officials could have done a better job of scrutinizing Mamtek's perations, including its available financial resources and the apparently false assertion that it had an affiliate in China already producing sucralose.

"What I see is obvious red flags being ignored, and to me that implies a strong desire to get this through ? to the point that sometimes they were blinded to the risks of the project," Schweich said Tuesday.

In a written response included in the audit, the Department of Economic Development said it "performed substantial due diligence related to the Mamtek project." A department spokesman declined further comment Tuesday.

In February 2011, the department adopted new due diligence procedures for its business incentives, which Schweich praised as "significant improvements" but said could be strengthened even further.

While announcing the criminal charges last week, Koster said "there were opportunities, perhaps, for more due diligence" in the Mamtek project.

The state House Committee on Government Oversight and Accountability issued a report in February also faulting due diligence efforts. It said the department should have forwarded to Moberly officials an email from its consultant in China raising questions about whether Mamtek actually was producing artificial sweetener there.

It also said private-sector bond consultants and credit-rating agencies should have more thoroughly scrutinized Mamtek and the city's ability to repay the bonds.

Among its many recommendations, the House committee said all municipal bonds should be subject to public votes.

The audit noted Missouri has no law limiting the amount of appropriation-backed bonds that can be issued by local governments, nor does it require they be placed on the ballot for approval.

Schweich's audit also addressed broader tax credit policies, recommending lawmakers prohibit projects from being able to claim multiple tax credits ? a suggestion also made last year by the Tax Credit Review Commission but hasn't been enacted.

The audit said Missouri issued $134 million of tax credits for project costs claimed under more than one program between the 2000 and 2011 fiscal years. Developers could have been issued up to $3.27 in federal and state tax credits for every $1 of project costs, the audit said.

Additionally, the audit said Missouri could have saved $68 million over that period if it had followed the federal government's lead by reducing the amount of low-income housing tax credits available for developers who also claimed historic preservation tax credits.

RLPC-Bankers pitch debt for AA and Saga sales or IPOs

LONDON (Reuters) - Bankers are pitching multibillion pound financing packages to back the potential sale or flotation of 107-year-old motoring services firm the AA and over-50's insurance and travel company Saga, banking sources said on Tuesday.

The two companies are owned by Acromas, which appointed Ernst & Young to carry out vendor due diligence last week as its private equity owners Charterhouse, CVC and Permira explore valuations for the companies as two separate entities.

The AA could be sold or floated on the stock market for as much as 5 billion pounds ($8.10 billion) while Saga has been valued at around 3 billion pounds, banking sources said.

Acromas was formed in 2007 though the 6.2 billion pound private equity-backed merger of AA and Saga, which was funded with a 4.8 billion pound leveraged loan at the peak of the buyout boom.

Arrangers Barclays and Mizuho tried to syndicate the buyout loan but were unable to do so after the market collapsed. Both banks were forced to hold the debt although the business has performed well in the interim.

    SEPTEMBER PITCHES

Bankers pitched new debt packages to the AA and Saga in September to cover either a sale or IPO. An acquisition would require debt for either a corporate strategic buyer or a private equity-led buyout and floatations usually require either pre- or post-IPO financing.

The debt packages are expected to include loans and bonds and could be denominated in sterling and euros due to their size.

"Banks are pitching financing for two standalone businesses. Both the loan and bond market would need to be accessed for such a large deal and there isn't the capacity to raise all the debt in pounds. Euros would be needed as well," a banker said.

A sale of AA would need around 3 billion pounds of debt and Saga's debt financing would be smaller, bankers said.

Sale or flotation of the businesses would allow Acromas to return cash to its private equity owners.

A decision is not pressing as Acromas's loans are not due to be repaid until 2015. Other options include refinancing Acromas's existing debt or a fresh capital injection from a new investor. A decision is expected by mid-2013.

"As we approach the first phase of our debt maturity in 2015, shareholders of the business will inevitably want to consider their options," a spokesman for Acromas said.

The euro zone crisis has reduced banks' ability to underwrite large financing packages and difficult debt market conditions are prompting financing discussions on jumbo buyouts at an earlier stage than before the credit crisis.

Early financing discussions have also been seen recently on the potential 8 billion pound sale of UK retailer M&S, which would require a 4 billion pound debt financing.

Voting laws may disenfranchise 10 million Hispanic U.S. citizens

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New voting laws in 23 of the 50 states could keep more than 10 million Hispanic U.S. citizens from registering and voting, a new study said on Sunday, a number so large it could affect the outcome of the November 6 election.

The Latino community accounts for more than 10 percent of eligible voters nationally. But the share in some states is high enough that keeping Hispanic voters away from the polls could shift some hard-fought states from support for Democratic President Barack Obama and help his Republican rival, Mitt Romney.

The new laws include purges of people suspected of not being citizens in 16 states that unfairly target Latinos, the civil rights group Advancement Project said in the study to be formally released on Monday.

Laws in effect in one state and pending in two others require proof of citizenship for voter registration. That imposes onerous and sometimes expensive documentation requirements on voters, especially targeting naturalized American citizens, many of whom are Latino, the liberal group said.

Nine states have passed restrictive photo identification laws that impose costs in time and money for millions of Latinos who are citizens but do not yet have the required identification, it said.

Republican-led state legislatures have passed most of the new laws since the party won sweeping victories in state and local elections in 2010. They say the laws are meant to prevent voter fraud; critics say they are designed to reduce turnout among groups that typically back Democrats.

Decades of study have found virtually no use of false identification in U.S. elections or voting by non-citizens. Activists say the bigger problem in the United States, where most elections see turnout of well under 60 percent, is that eligible Americans do not bother to vote.

Nationwide, polls show Obama leading Romney among Hispanic voters by 70 percent to 30 percent or more, and winning that voting bloc by a large margin is seen as an important key to Obama winning re-election.

The Hispanic vote could be crucial in some of the battleground states where the election is especially close, such as Nevada, Colorado and Florida.

For example, in Florida, 27 percent of eligible voters are Hispanic. With polls showing Obama's re-election race against Romney very tight in the state, a smaller turnout by Hispanic groups that favor Obama could tilt the vote toward the Republican.

NCAA Football Rankings, Week 5: Rutgers Enters Poll, Oregon Climbs Over LSU

Rutgers enters the poll for the first time this year and the sixth time in school history in this week's AP top-25 poll.

Sep 23, 2012 - Rutgers has entered the AP top-25 for only the sixth time in school history, joining Oregon State and Baylor as the three new teams in the poll for this week.

They replace UCLA, Arizona, and Michigan. UCLA lost to Oregon State in Westwood 27-20, Arizona lost in a rout to Oregon 49-0 in Eugene, and Michigan lost a brutal defensive contest against Notre Dame 13-6.

Due to their blowout win over Arizona and LSU's struggles against an unranked Auburn team, Oregon has supplanted LSU as the number two team in the country. Interestingly enough, Oregon has no number one votes, while LSU still holds one, keeping Alabama from being a unanimous number one selection.

Here is this week's full AP top-25.

Morning-after pills made available to N.Y. high school students

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Hundreds of New York City high schools students have received morning-after pills since the launch of a program that provides emergency contraception through public school nurses, the city's health department said on Monday.

Many schools around the nation have long made condoms available to students, but New York health officials said they believe the city is the first to make hormonal contraceptives available.

The program, launched in 13 high schools last year, gives students access to emergency contraceptive pills, designed to prevent pregnancy following unprotected sex or a contraceptive failure if taken within 72 hours, as well as condoms, birth- control pills and pregnancy testing.

The program is designed to battle the problem of unplanned pregnancies among teens, health officials said.

"In New York City over 7,000 young women become pregnant by age 17, 90 percent of which are unplanned," Alexandra Waldhorn, a health department spokeswoman, said in an e-mail.

"We are committed to trying new approaches, like this pilot program in place since January 2011, to improve a situation that can have lifelong consequences," she said.

Parents were informed of the program from the start and given the choice of opting out of any or all of the services but have largely supported the program, Waldhorn said.

Between 1 and 2 percent of parents sent back an opt-out form, she said.

Although the program has been in place since early last year, it was thrust into the public spotlight over the weekend when it was first reported by the New York Post.

The program - known as CATCH for Connecting Adolescents to Comprehensive Healthcare - is an extension of services that already were available to about a quarter of all New York public school students through privately run health clinics.

The 13 public schools were chosen because such facilities were not available nearby.

In the last school year, 567 students received emergency contraception and 580 students received Reclipsen, a birth-control pill, through the program.

Some anti-abortion advocates object to the morning-after drugs, which work by preventing the release of an egg, preventing fertilization or stopping a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterus.

The National Association of School Nurses, contacted by the Post, said it too did not know of any similar program in the nation.

2 Marines charged for allegedly urinating on corpses

NBC's Jim Miklaszewski on the ramifications of the video that allegedly shows Marines urinating on corpses.

By NBC News staff and wire services

Two Marines are facing criminal charges for allegedly urinating on the corpses of Taliban fighters last year in Afghanistan and posing for unofficial photos with casualties, Marine officials announced on Monday.

The criminal charges are the first levied on anyone over the incident, which was recorded on video and circulated on YouTube.

The video, which showed Marines in full combat gear urinating on the bodies of three dead men, triggered widespread anger in Afghanistan early this year, with Afghan President Hamid Karzai calling the Marines' actions "inhuman."?Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said he feared that the video could set back efforts to begin reconciliation talks with the Taliban.

The charged Marines, Staff Sergeants Joseph W. Chamblin and Edward W. Deptola, who were referred to trial by court martial, also face charges for failing to properly supervise junior Marines and failing to stop and report misconduct of junior Marines.?

Related:?Military punishes soldiers for Quran burning, Marines for urinating on Taliban corpses

The Marine Corps investigation showed that although the video was only circulated on the Internet in January, the incident actually took place on or around July 27, 2011, during a counter-insurgency operation in Afghanistan's Helmand province.?

The Marine Corps said on August 27 that three Marines pleaded guilty to charges over the video. But their punishment fell short of criminal prosecution.

Chamblin and Deptola, on the other hand, also face a series charges for failing to supervise junior Marines.

This includes simple things like failing to require them to wear protective equipment to more serious breaches, like failing to report the "negligent discharge" of a grenade launcher. Deptola is also charged with failing to stop the unnecessary damaging of Afghan compounds, the Marines said.

The Marines said there were other pending cases in the video investigation. They declined to elaborate on the incident in which the negligent actions took place.

After a lengthy investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Services,?Lt. Gen. Richard Mills, commanding general of Marine Corps Combat Development Command in Quantico, Va., made the decision to refer the cases to court martial, the Marine Corps Times reported.

Both Marines are from the Third Battalion, Second Marine Regiment at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina. ?No date has been set for their court martial.

He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians.[b]5 The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king?s table. They were to be trained for three years, and after that they were to enter the king?s service.

6 Among those who were chosen were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. 7 The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.

8 But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way. 9 Now God had caused the official to show favor and compassion to Daniel, 10 but the official told Daniel, ?I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your[c] food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you.?

11 Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, 12 ?Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.? 14 So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days.

15 At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. 16 So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead.

17 To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.

18 At the end of the time set by the king to bring them into his service, the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar. 19 The king talked with them, and he found none equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king?s service. 20 In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom.

21 And Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.

Latest Trends and Procedures Of Cosmetic Surgery | Jackie's ...

Until the 1980s, most cosmetic surgeries were approached as multi-staged procedures done over a period of years. Middle-aged patients might have their eyelids done but would then be advised to defer a facelift until reaching their 60s. None of the ?rejuvenation procedures? that are popular today even existed, and complications were so feared that patients would often have surgery on only one side of the face at a time, with several weeks between procedures.

Past and Present Trends In Cosmetic Surgery

In recent years, there have been several major trends in cosmetic surgery. First, people are now having procedures done earlier, with whole-face rejuvenation done in multiple treatments. The second, even more dramatic trend is the use of high technology in cosmetic laser surgery, which is now performed in a surgeon?s own office or an outpatient surgery facility.

There are social and economic trends at work, not just medical ones. The pressures of commercial life, of working to older ages and of women in their 40s succeeding the professional world all contribute to the popularity of cosmetic surgery. And it is well established that personal image and looks play a powerful role in the careers of professional people. Doctors now understand that among the various motivations for having cosmetic surgery earlier in life is some people?s need to secure their social and professional status.

    Cosmetic Surgery Innovation

Clearly, it is not just the new technologies and procedures that are available that have changed the nature of cosmetic surgery. Greater knowledge about the human body and its construction (and its flexibility) has led to there being many, many proponents for the multiple procedure approach. Then, too, there is the matter of balance. Following facial rejuvenation, a patient?s face may look younger but other aspects of their physique and appearance may not match up.

On the other hand, a ?whole-body? approach considers the entire person in the equation, which is why another new trend is cosmetic surgeons relying on help from psychologists, make-up artists and image consultants in developing patient plans. In other words, cosmetic surgery is trending toward being a ?package deal? for the whole person.

As far as new procedures, there has been a great deal of change and progress in the use of ?injectables,? and not just the famous Botox injections for wrinkle elimination. Various kinds of injectables have been developed to sculpt the human body in various ways and in various places. Used as part of an overall rejuvenation or reconstruction plan, along with other ever-advancing procedures like dermabrasion and cosmetic laser surgery, injectables have become an important part of the plastic surgeon?s toolkit.

Other technologies and procedures are continually evolving. Newer, more powerful and more accurate lasers are being developed and manufactured all the time, and advances in many medical fields?metallurgy, anesthesia, antibiotics, etc.?are rapidly adopted where needed by cosmetic surgeons.

Cosmetic Laser Surgery: Right For You?

Another major trend is that doctors are now performing cosmetic laser surgery and other procedures outside of the hospital atmosphere. Some plastic surgeons have their own outpatient surgery facilities, while others band together to form partnerships for this purpose. Procedures have become safer with advances in medical technology and doctors have learned to reduce complications to a fraction of a percent of all procedures.

This trend toward outpatient procedures has some very powerful unseen advantages. Leaving the hospital out of the equation has numerous benefits, beginning with an economic one.

It is far less expensive for the patient, who may have to consider cosmetic surgery financing options if unable to pay up front, if there is no hospital stay. In addition, the presence of antibiotic-resistant infections in hospitals is a good reason to avoid them if at all possible.

One other recent trend has been the good press that cosmetic surgery has been getting, compared to the negative portrayals of yesteryear and the casting of patients as ?victims.? In fact, some doctors point to the television series ?Extreme Makeover? as a reflection of a new appreciation for cosmetic surgery. The fact that the program also shows ?everyday people? having these procedures, not just the Ivana Trumps of the world, is an indication of how cosmetic laser surgery and other life-enhancing procedures are considered not only acceptable, but affordable, as well.

In this ground-breaking book, Victoria Pitts-Taylor examines why we consider some cosmetic surgeries to be acceptable or even beneficial and others to be unacceptable and possibly harmful. Drawing on years of research, in-depth interviews with surgeons and psychiatrists, analysis of newspaper articles, legal documents, and television shows, and her own personal experience with cosmetic surgery, Pitts-Taylor brings new perspectives to the promotion of "extreme" makeovers on television, the medicalization of "surgery addiction," the moral and political interrogation that many patients face, and feminist debates on the topic. Pitts-Taylor makes a compelling argument that the experience, meanings, and motivations for cosmetic surgery are highly social and, in doing so, provides a much needed "makeover" of our cultural understanding of cosmetic surgery.
