Now a smart and educated consumer finds ceiling fans that are well matched with the modern kitchen, stylish living room and even customary dining room and bedroom. During the purchase of a ceiling fan a consumer should consult the seller to find which type of style and size is advisable and effective for his requirement.

Selecting the appropriate size of ceiling fan for any desired location is essential for its performance and appearance. Since there is no clear or accurate medium to calculate right size of ceiling fan for particular area one can see number of calculators and charts online that provide different valuation. Ceiling fans are usually measured by their blade's length which must match with the size of the room where it has to be installed. The size of blades for home use purposes starts from 28 to 56 inches. The bulk of cooling of fan is experienced in the area under the blades of it. The more you move away from its blades, the cooling start getting reduced. One can notice that there is substantial decrease in the cooling when you move just 2 to 3 feet away from the tip of There is a significant drop off in airflow just outside of 2 feet from the angle of the blades of the fan. Eventually, the right size fan for a room is not only based on size of the room only, customer should also keep in account the outline of the area where it has to be installed.

Market Roadmap for the Second-Half of the Year ... - Yahoo! Finance

It's impossible to look ahead to the second-half of the year unless you know what you're trying to see. There's an overwhelming number of data points, stories and scenarios coming out everyday, swamping your senses and making it all but impossible to judge anything for yourself.

To help narrow down to the news that really matters to your portfolio, Breakout welcomed Jeff Kleintop, Chief Market Strategist at LPL Financial to lay out the roadmap of what will impact the markets most through year-end.

Second-Quarter Earnings Season

First up, earnings. The first Dow component Alcoa (AA) is expected to report results after-the-bell on July 9th, unofficially kicking off the Q2 earnings season. "A lot of people think the S&P 500 is GDP and if GDP is slowing sharply then earnings are slowing sharply as well; probably not true," says Kleintop. In fact a degree of weakness can support earnings in some cases. For example Kleintop believes a lack of hiring will support strong margins as the cost of hiring and training will be lower.

Further, Kleintop says the impact of Europe will be less than expected and something the market could "look through" regardless.

November Elections Impact on Market

The election will come to the fore after Labor Day by American tradition. Kleintop says the State polls are more important than the Presidential race. "The Senate actually holds more impact on what's going to happen than any of the other elections," he says.

Two thirds of the Senate elections involve Democrat incumbents. A swing of three will shift power to the Republicans, a prospect Kleintop says has "profound implications" for heavily regulated and legislated sectors. If it looks like there's going to be a shift in power, traders will start positioning themselves accordingly.

The Looming Fiscal Cliff

Already a subject of discussion and concern, the expiration of the Bush tax cuts, payroll tax cuts, and spending cuts all loom. By Kleintop's math it amounts to about 3.5% of GDP, more than America has ever cut since 1947.

If Republicans take Congress he believes they'll buy themselves time and "kick the can down the road 3 to 6 months to give them the opportunity to really address these budget issues and mitigate some of the more negative and onerous consequences."

Let's face it, the Democrats will kick the can as well. It's what Americans do.

He's a sunny optimist in terms of how these things play out but Kleintop still has a hard time getting too excited about stocks here. Calling this a "base building year" he's looking for the S&P500 to be around 1,375 by year end. One can only imagine what his target would be if he thought these factors weren't going to play out so well.

?Muslim Brotherhood Preaching Israel Destruction After Election?

"Every Muslim will be asked about the Zionists' usurpation of al-Aqsa Mosque. Why did he not seek to recover it, and wage Jihad in His way? Did he not care about the fatwa of the ulema [scholars] of the Muslims, 'Jihad of self and money to recover al Aqsa is a duty on every Muslim?'" askedMohamed Badie, General Guide of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, in a June 14th speech translated exclusively by the Investigative Project on Terrorism.

A tomato by any other gene: Just as sweet? (+video)

New research shows that the bland flavor of a popular variety of firm tomatoes is caused by a genetic switch. Locating this switch may enable scientists to create good-tasting and good-shipping tomatoes in the future. ?

Researchers found a genetic switch responsible for some of the sugar production within a?tomato. A new study in Friday's edition of Science found that the common type of?tomato?bred for firmness and good shipping also inadvertently turns off the sugar-producing switch. That makes it less sweet and blander than garden varieties.

University of California Davis plant scientist Ann Powell said knowing the genetics behind the sugar-making could lead someday to development of sweeter?tomatoes?that also travel well.

Tear off vs. Overlay: Conflict in Roofing

The most commonly asked question about roofing is whether to repair the roof or replace it. The second most commonly asked question about roofing is whether to tear the roof off or lay a new layer over it. The third most commonly asked question about roofing is "What is up with tearing off vs. overlaying?"

Shingles suffer from wear and tear as they are constantly exposed to the weather: sun, rain, and snow. When shingles have reached the peak of their service life, fresh ones take the place of the old breed. However, when fresh shingles start falling off shortly after you nail them, the problem may be your old roofing structure. Therefore, the burning question remains: "Should you tear off the roof or place a fresh layer on top?"

Tear off: As simple as it gets, tearing off the roof means replacing the entire roofing structure for structural integrity. When the roof gets creaky or leaky under gale-force winds or torrential rains, a major overhaul may be in order. Of course, tearing off your old roof is not exactly friendly to your budget; but solutions to severe roofing problems see it as the ideal way.

A major overhaul of the existing roofing system should be considered as a last resort -- when the roof is beyond repair. If the trusses and rafters start to sag, as well as spongy areas on the roof start to appear, tearing the roof off may be a better option. A fresh roof over your house will ensure the integrity of the home and prevent additional costs in frequent repairs.

Overlay: An overlay on the existing roofing system is the more affordable option, as it uses less materials and equipment. Many people consider overlaying; but, in reality, people rarely overlay their roofs. This is because most building codes do not usually allow for more than one roofing layer. Dallas roofing companies say that the local building code does not say anything about overlay roofing.

Overlay was the practice a few decades ago. However, inspectors and insurance companies have grown more reluctant against overlay roofing, possibly because of issues on the structural integrity of the home. The weight of multiple roofing layers can put stress on the trusses, increasing the risk of collapse. Still, check with the Dallas local building department or roofing companies in Dallas TX on whether or not overlay roofing is possible.

If you want to know more about tear off and overlay roofing, RoofHelp.com has an interesting guide. The article lists the right situations when to consider a major overhaul or an overlay job. Don't forget to ask a Plano roofing company if they take overlaying as an option.

First-ever changes in an exoplanet atmosphere detected

ScienceDaily (June 29, 2012) ? An international team of astronomers using data from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has made an unparalleled observation, detecting significant changes in the atmosphere of a planet located beyond our solar system.

The scientists conclude the atmospheric variations occurred in response to a powerful eruption on the planet's host star, an event observed by NASA's Swift satellite.

"The multiwavelength coverage by Hubble and Swift has given us an unprecedented view of the interaction between a flare on an active star and the atmosphere of a giant planet," said lead researcher Alain Lecavelier des Etangs at the Paris Institute of Astrophysics (IAP), part of the French National Scientific Research Center located at Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris.

The exoplanet is HD 189733b, a gas giant similar to Jupiter, but about 14 percent larger and more massive. The planet circles its star at a distance of only 3 million miles, or about 30 times closer than Earth's distance from the sun, and completes an orbit every 2.2 days. Its star, named HD 189733A, is about 80 percent the size and mass of our sun.

Astronomers classify the planet as a "hot Jupiter." Previous Hubble observations show that the planet's deep atmosphere reaches a temperature of about 1,900 degrees Fahrenheit (1,030 C).

HD 189733b periodically passes across, or transits, its parent star, and these events give astronomers an opportunity to probe its atmosphere and environment. In a previous study, a group led by Lecavelier des Etangs used Hubble to show that hydrogen gas was escaping from the planet's upper atmosphere. The finding made HD 189733b only the second-known "evaporating" exoplanet at the time.

The system is just 63 light-years away, so close that its star can be seen with binoculars near the famous Dumbbell Nebula. This makes HD 189733b an ideal target for studying the processes that drive atmospheric escape.

"Astronomers have been debating the details of atmospheric evaporation for years, and studying HD 189733b is our best opportunity for understanding the process," said Vincent Bourrier, a doctoral student at IAP and a team member on the new study.

When HD 189733b transits its star, some of the star's light passes through the planet's atmosphere. This interaction imprints information on the composition and motion of the planet's atmosphere into the star's light.

In April 2010, the researchers observed a single transit using Hubble's Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS), but they detected no trace of the planet's atmosphere. Follow-up STIS observations in September 2011 showed a surprising reversal, with striking evidence that a plume of gas was streaming away from the exoplanet.

The researchers determined that at least 1,000 tons of gas was leaving the planet's atmosphere every second. The hydrogen atoms were racing away at speeds greater than 300,000 mph. The findings will appear in an upcoming issue of the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Because X-rays and extreme ultraviolet starlight heat the planet's atmosphere and likely drive its escape, the team also monitored the star with Swift's X-ray Telescope (XRT). On Sept. 7, 2011, just eight hours before Hubble was scheduled to observe the transit, Swift was monitoring the star when it unleashed a powerful flare. It brightened by 3.6 times in X-rays, a spike occurring atop emission levels that already were greater than the sun's.

"The planet's close proximity to the star means it was struck by a blast of X-rays tens of thousands of times stronger than the Earth suffers even during an X-class solar flare, the strongest category," said co-author Peter Wheatley, a physicist at the University of Warwick in England.

After accounting for the planet's enormous size, the team notes that HD 189733b encountered about 3 million times as many X-rays as Earth receives from a solar flare at the threshold of the X class.

Ronaldo's decision to wait didn't help Portugal

By CHRIS LEHOURITES

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:56 a.m. ET June 28, 2012

WARSAW, Poland (AP) -Cristiano Ronaldo is the kind of player that can change a game with one moment of excellence, the kind of player every team wants to have when the game is on the line.

Until, maybe, when it comes down to a penalty shootout.

The Portugal captain was one of the best players at the year's European Championship. Some would argue he was THE best, while others wouldn't even deign to argue about something that so many believe to be pure fact.

But against Spain, on the big stage of the Euro 2012 semifinals, there was no shot from Ronaldo in the penalty shootout. No chance for the Real Madrid winger to lift his team to victory.

And not even a reason why.

After his team was eliminated at the Donbass Arena, Ronaldo said he told Portugal coach Paulo Bento he wanted to take the fifth kick. That's the same spot he was in back in 2006, when Portugal beat England in a shootout in the World Cup quarterfinals.

"He said to me, 'You want a kick?' And I said, 'Yes, in the fifth,"' Ronaldo said late Wednesday night, shortly after Portugal lost the match. "We missed two penalties so it's frustration."

Before the shootout, Ronaldo was improving with every match. He had scored three goals in his previous two games at Euro 2012, and had several chances to break the scoreless draw against Spain - including a 90th-minute shot from just inside the area that he sent high over the bar. He also sent a pair of free kicks into the same space way above the crossbar, somewhat closer to the top row of spectators than Spain's goal.

And then came the shootout, football's version of a coin toss.

Ronaldo hasn't had the best of times in shootouts in recent years. While still with Manchester United, his spot kick against Chelsea in the Champions League final was saved. And this year, his attempt against Bayern Munich in the Champions League semifinals was again saved.

Two big misses for a big player on the big stage, and no chance for redemption in Donetsk.

"If it would have been 4-4, he would have taken the last penalty and we would have talked in another way (now)," Bento said through a translator. "We defined beforehand what would be the best conditions to succeed and now we didn't. I don't regret anything."

Ronaldo came into Wednesday's match on a roll. He was less-than-stellar in Portugal's opening two matches, but he scored both goals in a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands to guarantee a spot in the quarterfinals. Then he scored the lone goal in the win over the Czech Republic.

Those two displays certainly quieted the distracting chants of "Messi, Messi" that he endured earlier in the tournament. And they went a long way to easing the somewhat commonly held view that Ronaldo is no good on the international stage.

But his decision to wait - possibly only in the hope that he would be the hero - in the shootout did nothing to keep the team in the tournament.

And in the end, the lasting image from the shootout - maybe even more memorable than Cesc Fabregas' winning shot off the post - will be Ronaldo with his face hidden in his hands, probably wondering what went wrong.

"It's always difficult moments," Ronaldo said. "I expressed myself in the way that I feel."

Chimpanzee Infanticide at the LA Zoo: Common Occurrence or Cause For Alarm?

Sometimes, zoo animals behave unnaturally. Most animals on display at zoos are not really designed for captive living. If you?ve been to a zoo, no doubt you?ve noticed evidence of this: a tiger who paces back and forth, or a monkey that does nothing but circle the enclosure. Life in captivity can even result in various forms of self-harm: a bird that plucks out its feathers, or a horse that bites at her own body, occasionally drawing blood.

Sometimes, zoo animals behave naturally. They mate. Or refuse to mate. They groom eachother. They get sick. They get better. They care for their young. They sleep ? a lot.

They fight.

It must have been extremely unsettling for a handful of zoogoers to watch a male chimpanzee kill a three month old infant female chimpanzee at the LA Zoo on Tuesday. She was the first chimpanzee to be born at the LA Zoo in thirteen years and was therefore, in a sense, symbolic. It?s a serious setback for conservation efforts, since there are fewer than 300,000 chimpanzees living in the wild, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The chimpanzee colony at the LA Zoo, now numbering fifteen members, is one of the largest in the country, and is considered a model for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums? Species Survival Plan Program.

It is sad whenever an animal at a zoo dies, especially at so young an age. I am certain that members of the LA Zoo?s staff ? especially those on the Great Ape Team who worked directly with the unnamed infant ? will be grieving along with Gracie, the mother.

In a statement, the zoo expressed its surprise and regret:

Chimpanzee behavior can sometimes be aggressive and violent and the Zoo is sorry that visitors had to be exposed to this. Gracie is being allowed to keep the infant overnight to allow her the opportunity to grieve. This is a heartbreaking and tragic loss for the Zoo and especially for the Great Ape Team who have worked diligently to care for the infant and its mother since its birth.

Gracie with her infant, on May 14, 2012.

Watch a chimpanzee troop at a zoo for a few minutes, and you can?t help but be struck by the similarity between humans and our evolutionary cousins. Familiar expressions of emotion dance across their faces. They playfully chase eachother around. They cool off in the shade, and warm up in the sunlight. They eat and play, fight and make up.

On one visit to a zoo, a juvenile chimpanzee approached me from the other side of the glass. As I looked into the eyes of my new chimpanzee friend, I experienced the overwhelming sense that there was a someone in there who was looking right back at me. It feels like looking into a mirror and seeing a part of yourself in the reflection.

I suspect that this sense of familiarity is what prompted one woman, in an interview with the LA Times, to express her anger at the zoo?s staff:

Zoo patron Victoria Pipkin-Lane said she was ?furious? at zoo staff because she said she saw two tussles between chimps just days before the baby was killed.

Pipkin-Lane, the executive director of Los Angeles County?s Quality and Productivity Commission, said she witnessed a 10-minute fight between two chimps Saturday. One of the chimps appeared to be protecting Gracie and her baby chimp.

?It was scary,? Pipkin-Lane said. ?Those of us that were near the compound were like, ?My God, why aren?t they going to do something about this???

In a letter to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, she asked that he demand a full report and action plan from the zoo.

One reason that the keepers were unable to intervene in the chimpanzee fight was that chimpanzees are much stronger than humans, despite their lower average weight. If the keepers had intervened, it is possible that journalists would be reporting the death of the keepers in addition to the young infant. In a 2009 article in Slate, anthropologist John Hawks commented on the strength of chimpanzees. While not five-to-eight times stronger than humans, as the common myth goes, chimpanzees remain quite impressive. ?A chimpanzee had, pound for pound, as much as twice the strength of a human when it came to pulling weights,? Hawks wrote. ?The apes beat us in leg strength, too, despite our reliance on our legs for locomotion.?

A few fights here and there among chimpanzees would not have been cause for concern. Chimpanzees fight all the time, both in captivity and in the wild. For the chimps as for the members of the zoo?s primate team, Saturday was very likely just another day, because as far as species go, chimpanzees are fairly aggressive. They are unlikely to voluntarily share food ? even between mother and infant! In the wild, neighboring groups often go to war, competing over territory and resources. Within social groups, fights commonly occur over access to females and to food.

And chimpanzees don?t only pick on those their own size.

Infanticide is a common feature of chimpanzee life, both in captivity and in the wild. In a 1999 paper in the journal Primates, primatologists Adam Clark Arcadi and Richard Wrangham reported that at least twenty cases of infanticide had been recorded in three chimpanzee study areas in Africa. By 2002, according to a paper published that year in the same journal, chimpanzee infanticides had been observed in four study areas. Given how little of wild chimpanzee behavior can actually observed by human researchers, this statistic suggests that infanticide is a fairly common occurrence.

The details, however, vary quite a bit. The killers can be males or females. They kill alone or with partners. Occasionally the killer is from a different social group, but usually the killer and infant belong to the same troop. Since female chimpanzees mate promiscuously, males may even kill infants that they fathered themselves. The mothers of the victims may disassociate entirely from the killers, or they may continue or increase their association with the killers. Sometimes, they even go on to mate with the killer. Often, but not always, the victim is cannibalized.

Scientists have not yet reached consensus as to the reason for infanticide in chimpanzees. Whatever the explanation, it is clear that infanticide is a recurring feature of their complex social lives.

What was natural for the chimpanzees, however, was clearly unnatural for the humans. Indeed, the zoo is an unnatural environment for the animals on both sides of the glass.

In nature, it is impossible for a human to come face to face with a polar bear and a penguin on the same day. A visitor to a typical zoo can get up close and personal with big cats like lions and leopards without fearing for their own safety. A group of social primates can intimately observe the lives of a second group of social primates. And they can do it without trekking through the jungles of Uganda or the Congo. At times, it isn?t pretty. It can be downright scary.

Rather than castigate the staff of the LA Zoo (which is owned, operated, and maintained by the City of Los Angeles), Mayor Villaraigosa should instead remind the public that the chimpanzees in the zoo are real, wild animals, who lead complex, highly nuanced social lives that we do not yet completely understand. Humans look at chimpanzees and see a partial reflection of themselves, and still become surprised when things turn violent. Tragedy befalls humans all the time; why should chimpanzees be any different?

Zoogoers need to remember that nature is not all rainbows and unicorns. We do not live in a mythical Edenic garden or Elysian field. That isn?t to say that nature does not feature cooperation in abundance. One of the most impressive examples of cooperation in chimpanzees is the way they work together in intricate choreography as they hunt colobus monkeys. While examples of cooperation are omnipresent in the natural world, even among chimpanzees, at times nature is indeed ?red in tooth and claw,? as Tennyson famously wrote.

Zoos can be fun, educational, awe-inspiring places. Curated and presented correctly, they can inspire children and adults to appreciate and learn more about the natural world. Nature documentaries of even the highest quality are unlikely to match the visceral experience of observing living animals. But we cannot expect animals to act anything other than naturally, and until we more completely understand their behavior, there will always be a certain amount of unpredictability associated with rearing animals in captivity.

More predictable critters can be found at Disneyland, where they?re made of felt and foam.

Dark Knight Rises speed paintings condense hours into minutes

The Dark Knight Rises is one of the most anticipated?films of the year, and with its comic book roots, it should come as no surprise that there is plenty of fan art to celebrate its upcoming release. Here are a pair of amazing speed paintings that show both the primary vilain, Bane, and Batman himself, in all their gritty glory.

The first video shows YouTube user?Eastfist creating a stunning 1-hour speed sketch of Bane, shrunken down into just 30 seconds of frantic mouse clicks. The second clip (below) is a 3-hour masterpiece by?Duks, showing the titular Dark Knight in a very menacing pose. Both pieces were created with the help of?Photoshop and, we imagine, lots of experience.

The Dark Knight Rises is the last in director Christopher Nolan's critically acclaimed reboot of the?Batman franchise. The film stars Christian Bale as Batman, Tom Hardy as primary antagonist Bane, and Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. It is scheduled to hit theaters on July 20.

adf building 1 GRAND OPENING OF SAMUEL H. SCRIPPS STUDIOS

?

The American Dance Festival (ADF) is proud to announce the official grand opening of the Samuel H. Scripps Studios, located at 721 Broad Street, Durham, NC.? The opening of the studios marks the first time in the Festival?s celebrated 79-year history that the organization will own real estate and be able to provide year-round programming at its own facilities. The ADF will host a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, July 2 at 12:00 pm to celebrate the grand opening with the Durham community. Durham Mayor Bill Bell, as well as ADF Director Jodee Nimerichter, SHS Foundation President and ADF Board Member Richard Feldman, building developer Arthur Rogers of Eno Ventures, LLC, building architect Sasha Berghausen of BLOK Architecture, and ADF?s design consultant Oswald Nagler, among others, will be present to cut the ribbon.

As part of Ms. Nimerichter?s vision to expand the ADF?s reach into the community and dance world at large, and through an incredibly generous donation from the SHS Foundation, the ADF will begin providing year-round dance classes and workshops to the community and will have the opportunity to host choreographic residencies in the new beautifully designed studios.

?As a long time supporter of ADF, the SHS Foundation saw the importance of supporting this initiative by providing?the lead gift to take advantage of this incredible space. This space will allow ADF to continue the invaluable work they do within the dance world, as well as in the Durham community. This is another example of new ADF Director Jodee Nimerichter?s leadership and vision, and commitment to the organization?s overall mission,? said SHS Foundation President, Richard Feldman.

Classes will be offered for all ages and ability levels, taught by distinguished faculty that have been hand selected by the ADF. The classes and workshops provided through this new studio will play an integral part in supporting the ADF?s continued commitment to providing a sound scientific/aesthetic base for professional education and training of dancers. Additionally, the ADF is excited to be able to use these studios to mark their commitment to Durham and to build an even larger dance community in the Triangle.

Marking her place in ADF?s history, new ADF Director Jodee Nimerichter is delighted to head this expansion of the ADF?s renowned programming.

?Having a permanent space has been one of our longtime dreams. It will allow ADF to expand and reaffirm its commitment to making Durham its home and to provide the community with the very best in modern dance training. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have a space so close to Duke University?s East Campus and our current offices presented itself and we had to take it. We are indebted to our board member Richard Feldman and the SHS Foundation for providing the initial support we needed to take advantage of this extraordinary opportunity for the ADF, and hope that the community is as excited as we are,? said Nimerichter.

ADF expects to launch a capital campaign in the coming months to complete the funding for this initiative, as well as sustain and support the ADF Educational Programs and Endowment. Community members are invited to walk through the new studios following the ribbon cutting. Report: Stowaways in container on ship in NJ port

By Elizabeth Chuck, msnbc.com

Immigration agents were called to Port Newark in New Jersey Wednesday morning amid reports that a ship docked there has multiple stowaways aboard.

Inspectors first became suspicious when they heard knocking and other noises "consistent with the sounds of people inside" coming from a cargo container below deck while the ship was anchored in the Ambrose Channel outside the Port of New York and New Jersey, Coast Guard spokesman Charles Rowe told NBCNewYork.com.

After hearing the noises during the routine overnight inspection, Coast Guard officials stayed aboard the Ville d'Aquarius, which had ports of call in Pakistan, Egypt, and India before its arrival, as it docked in Newark this morning, reported NorthJersey.com.

The container is believed to have been put on the ship in one of two ports in India -- either Mundra or Nahva Sheva -- before the ship left India on June 7, Rowe told NBCNewYork.com. The ship's last port before the United States was in Egypt on June 15.

The ship's manifest said the container was carrying machine parts to be unloaded in Norfolk, Va.

The Ville d'Aquarius is registered in Cyprus, according to the New Jersey Star-Ledger. Initial reports were that its current voyage originated in Pakistan; numerous media outlets later said it began in the United Arab Emirates.

A call to the Coast Guard seeking clarification from msnbc.com was not immediately returned.

NBC?chopper video captured?federal officials?swarming around?the New Jersey dock to investigate the vessel. More than a dozen ambulances were also lined up.

Details about the number of alleged stowaways or their health were not immediately available.

"If there are people or other material, and we don't know what they are, we are simply covering all the bases," Rowe told New Jersey's Star-Ledger.

An official?told NBCNewYork.com "it will take a significant amount of time" to reach the container. As of late morning, three containers had been unloaded by authorities, all of which contained only cargo, reported WABC in New York.

Officials say they get stowaways in New York harbors about six times a year, NBCNewYork.com reported.

Daily Business News - MH Marketing Sales Management

NJ reports from Pennsville, New Jersey township officials have unanimously voted to increase fess on manufactured homes in MHCs from $24 to $28 a month, collected by the MHC owner and then forwarded to the township. There are approximately 200 homes in the White Oaks and Southbridge communities in this town that borders the Delaware River in southwest New Jersey across from Wilmington, DE. MH owners also pay for fire and police service as well as trash pick-up. The revised fee schedule was on the agenda in Feb. of this year, but several MH residents objected and the ordinance was shelved. MHProNews has learned the ordinance will become effective July 1 and will run through June 30, 2013, at which time the fees may be increased again.

Kenneth M. Quinn: The Morrill Act: A 19th Century Initiative With 21st Century Implications

June 26 marked the culmination of a remarkable 46-day period during which we celebrated the sesquicentennial observance of three actions taken in the midst of the Civil War -- three actions that transformed America, and which today hold enormous promise as a model of international development and hunger alleviation for the 21st century.

On June 26, 1862, the U.S. Congress passed the Morrill Act, introduced by a senator from Vermont. The legislation provided for grants of federal land to states willing to establish a public university with a focus on agriculture. Known as "Land-Grant" institutions, these new centers of research, expanded by the addition of historically black and tribal institutions of higher learning, can now be found in all 50 states.

In that same 46-day period, while the future of the Union was in doubt, President Abraham Lincoln and the Congress also agreed on the establishment of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (May 15, 1862), and the passage of the Homestead Act (May 20, 1862), which provided for ownership of 160 acres, without cost, by individual farmers who would work the land.

These three visionary governmental initiatives created the amalgamation of family farms, research centers, extension services and a steady flow of educated graduates and specialists. Together, and abetted by critical private sector innovation, these elements created a system of agricultural production that uplifted successive generations of increasingly well-fed and well-nourished Americans, and in the 20th century became the envy of the world.

To mark this anniversary, the Association for Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) held a celebratory conference in Washington last Tuesday that appropriately drew an array of impressive speakers including Bill Gates, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack. I was there to present the World Food Prize Norman Borlaug Medallion to the land-grant institutions, for their central role in bringing about the "single greatest period of food production and hunger reduction in all human history."

In my remarks, I reflected that the World Food Prize founder, the late Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, could be considered the most significant product of all three of those historic decisions. Known as the man who "saved more lives than any other person who has ever lived," Borlaug was raised on a Homestead Act-type family farm in Iowa, was hired for his first job in the Forest Service of USDA, and received a Ph.D. in plant pathology from a land-grant institution (the University of Minnesota) and was on the faculty of another (Texas A&M).

With his "land-grant" degree in hand, Borlaug went to Mexico in 1944 where he developed miracle wheat, which he then took to India and Pakistan as they were about to face a devastating mass famine in the mid-1960s. As those countries adapted Borlaug's approach to agriculture, thus averting this human catastrophe, the Green Revolution was born.

It is particularly interesting that of the 36 individuals who have received the World Food Prize -- known informally as the "Nobel Prize for Food and Agriculture" -- over the past 25 years, fully one-half have a direct connection to a land-grant institution.

There are other especially prominent agricultural heroes with links to the land-grant institutions and USDA who also deserve special mention. Among them is Henry A. Wallace, the graduate of Iowa State University (the first ever public land-grant institution), who established Pioneer Hi-Bred International after developing hybrid corn, and who then led USDA through the turmoil of the Depression as secretary of agriculture. Another was George Washington Carver, whose years of dedicated service and research made Tuskegee University a beacon for agricultural achievement during the first half of the 20th century.

While our foundation was honoring the land-grant institutions for their exceptional achievements over the past 150 years, the most significant impact of this system may lie ahead. The APLU Morrill Act conference came one month after the Chicago Council for Global Affairs sponsored a conference on global development, as a precursor to the G-8 summit. At that earlier event, President Barack Obama was joined by three African leaders and an array of international experts in highlighting the Feed the Future initiative, which Secretary of State Clinton and USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah have built over the past three years. During that conference, one of the speakers urged all in attendance to think of one "Big Idea" that might serve as the model for ensuring that Africa could achieve the promise of the Green Revolution in the coming decades.

As I sat there I thought to myself, it just may be that the model created by President Lincoln and Senator Justin Morrill -- of family-owned farms, government-sponsored agricultural research and extension services, and land-grant-like educational institutions -- might just be a model worthy of emulation to attain that goal.

prsa-sunshine-conference-2012-public-speaking-recap - Schipul Blog

I had the privilege to speak during and attend the PRSA Sunshine District Conference 2012 last week in Tampa Bay, Florida! The theme was Navigating New PR Channels.

Sunshine 2012 (or hashtag #Sunshine2012) was a fantastic conference that featured speakers in PR, Marketing, and Communications discussing brands from Coca-Cola to Playstation to local NHL team the Tampa Bay Lightning. And included an address by PRSA President Bill Murray (no, not that Bill Murray).

See all of the photos of my trip on Schipul.com & read some of the highlights below!

My Presentation ? SEO Metrics in the Real World

My presentation was on SEO Web Metrics in the Real World. Web metrics can be overwhelming, especially considering the constant changes in web trends and interfaces!

I focused on what metrics matter most when making sense of all of the data available from tools like Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools, and tips for complementing that data with offline metrics.

Major points from my presentation:

  1. Top 5 Metrics I look at when reading Analytics reports:
    1. Traffic Trends ? should mirror offline season trends
    2. Sources ? including PR & social media linkbacks
    3. Keywords ? branded and non-branded
    4. Content ? top content & what is changing
    5. Conversion Path
  2. Test, Test, Test!
    • As Ed often reminds me:??There is no such thing as a marketing argument, only a marketing test?
    • Use Google URL Builder to create Campaigns to A/B test ? try to test one thing at a time, and keep iterating
  3. My top tip for tracking offline data: Involve Sales in the process!
    • Educate your sales team on SEO, and ask for their feedback on trends they are seeing and ideas for new content. They have great insight from their interactions with customers!
    • Have your team who answers the phones ask prospects how they heard about you, including what term they searched in Google if possible
  4. Remember that Rank isn?t everything!?
    • Search Engine Marketing is a funnel of impressions in search, clicks through to your website, and if the content on your site is compelling enough ? conversions
    • Scrutinize every part of the funnel!

Insight from the Fantastic Speakers of #Sunshine2012

I got a lot of insight from the informative and actionable content from all the speakers throughout the conference. A few major trends from the conference speakers:

1. ?Brand Control? is moving to the consumers

  • Allyson Park -?Vice President of Corporate External Affairs, The Coca-Cola Company ? focused much of her talk on how the brand is no longer in the hands of the company ? the brand owner is now the consumer
  • Coke embraces this ? their Facebook page is still run by the 2 fans who created it initially!

2. Take advantage of technology tools, especially mobile devices

Many speakers noted new tools and technology that are becoming more and more important as part of the marketing/PR mix. This is all about using all of the tools in your toolkit. For instance: Video content is powerful and easier than ever to distribute. Social Media is a power customer service tool when used correctly.

Check out all the slides from Tony & Amber of Head of Lettuce?s presentation on the Cardinal Sins of Social Media?- including tips for tapping into your online advocates.

Mobile!

Taking advantage of mobile devices to deliver real time relevant content through mobile sites and mobile apps is becoming not just an advantage, but more and more an expectation of brands.?Here are some stats from Jody Haneke?s?presentation on the Mobile Marketing Mix:

  • 35% of mobile workers check email before anything else ? before getting dressed or eating breakfast
  • 53% of tablet users read news on their phone every day
  • Smartphone and tablet users visit more pages in a given sitting than people on a desktop
  • SMS still the most widely used mobile data form on the planet.

3. Content Strategy

You can?t be everything to everyone, focus on what makes sense and keep it organization.

Some great tips from?Josh Hallett of Voce Connect, who manages large amounts of content for brands like Sony Playstation:

  • Plan ?episodic? content that you can schedule in advance ? i.e. ?Throwback Thursday? or Employee Spotlight
  • Don?t host your video ? post on YouTube or Vimeo and embed, you get the advantage of the second network
  • Focus on your content plan ? what makes sense for your brand, don?t worry too much about platform changes
  • Help your visitors by telling them what is the most important item today or this week. Make your top post ?sticky? or give it more prominence ? this helps visitors navigate and helps you promote your top priority
  • It?s ok to share something more than once ? especially on a real time platform like Twitter. Post at a different time of day with a different call to action or perspective and monitor your results!

4. The Importance of Internal Communication

??As leaders, everything that we say or do communicates something?? ? Keynote David Grossman

David Grossman spoke on the concept that we can?t not communicate ? everything you do from how you speak to how you spend your time to body language communicates SOMETHING to the organization.?Our brains are wired to take in a scene and draw conclusions, so that?s what people do.

This is especially important as the intangible benefits matter more and more to employee satisfaction. Communication is key is leadership, including in meeting employee needs.

What do great leader communicators do?

  1. Become Audience Obsessed
  2. Make messages clear, compelling, & relevant
  3. Plan your communication
  4. Set context and make information relevant
  5. Listen and check for understanding
  6. Select the right vehicle
  7. Communicate with truth & integrity
  8. Match words & actions

I am looking forward to reading more in David?s book ?You Can?t Not Communicate?!

Alaska glacier wreckage may be 1950s military plane

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) ? The wreckage of a military plane found this month on an Alaska glacier is that of an Air Force plane that crashed in 1952, killing all 52 people aboard, military officials said Wednesday.

Army Capt. Jamie Dobson said evidence found at the crash site correlates with the missing C-124A Globemaster, but the military is not eliminating other possibilities because much investigation still needs to be done.

Processing DNA samples from relatives of those on board the plane could take up to six years, Dobson said.

"We're still at the very beginning of this investigation," she said. "This is very close to the starting line, not the finish line."

The Alaska National Guard discovered the wreckage and possibly bones June 10 on Colony Glacier, about 40 miles east of Anchorage. The wreckage was spotted soon after the heavy transport plane vanished Nov. 22, 1952, with 41 passengers and 11 crew members, but it became buried in snow and likely churned beneath the surface of the glacier for decades, Dobson said.

"The ice gives up what it wants to give up when it wants to give it up," she said. "It's really in control."

The plane went down on a flight from McChord Air Force Base in Washington state.

An Associated Press report on Nov. 24, 1952, said the Globemaster was the third big Air Force transport plane to crash or vanish in Alaska that month and the sixth around the Pacific Rim.

Soon after the crash, a 12-member military team tried three times to make it to the site, but was thwarted by bad weather, said Tonja Anderson, whose grandfather Isaac Anderson was among those on board the doomed flight. The 41-year-old Tampa, Fla., woman has researched the crash for 12 years since her grandmother, now deceased, gave her details of the airman who died at age 21, leaving behind a young widow and 1 ?-year-old son.

"I'm overwhelmed," Anderson said Wednesday about the positive identification. It's something she has tried to long get from the military, she said, only to be told that recovering the remains from the plane's hidden grave was unfeasible and would be too expensive.

"If they can bring me one bone of my grandfather or his dog tag, that would be closure for me," she said.

Days after the Globemaster went down, a member of the Fairbanks Civil Air Patrol, along with a member of the 10th Air Rescue Squadron, landed at a glacier in the area and positively identified the wreckage as the Globemaster.

According to an AP account, the civil air patrol member was Terris Moore, who was president of the University of Alaska. After returning from the site, he told reporters that the plane "obviously was flying at full speed" when it hit Mount Gannett, sliding down the snow-covered cliffs, exploding and disintegrating over two or three acres.

Only the tail and flippers of the craft were intact, but the tail numbers were enough for an identification. Moore said blood was found on a piece of blanket and there was a "sickly-sweet smell of death."

The debris was discovered June 14 while Alaska National Guardsmen were flying a Blackhawk helicopter during a training mission near the glacier. The guardsmen flew over the area several times.

Federal aviation officials implemented temporary flight restrictions over the area while the military investigation was conducted.

An eight-man Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command arrived last week, military officials said. It completed its work Tuesday at the glacier.

The team recovered materials like a life-support system from the wreckage and possible bones from the glacier. The evidence was being taken to the command's lab in Hawaii for analysis.
