In October, the U.S. Department of Education switched to a new website for online student loan payments, www.myedaccount.com .
On Oct. 12, a blog post by a department representative, ?ED Working to Resolve Problems with Direct Loan Website,? began receiving many complaints, which continued into February and reached 719.
The department did not return multiple phone calls for comment made over the last week from the Record Searchlight. Representatives with the private company that?s affiliated with the website did not return requests for comment.
Financial aid employees haven?t heard of any complaints, said Kentiner David, associate director of financial aid at California State University, Chico.
But, he said his department doesn?t handle repayment of Student Loans beyond educating college students about their rules and responsibilities.
Many of those who posted to the blog cited interest problems and fluctuating account values.
Others, including Mercer, found their payments were not being posted.
She?s paying back around $60,000 in PLUS loans, which a parent borrows to pay for a child?s college education. She said one of her daughters attended California State University, Humboldt, and another attended California State University, Chico.
She said she?s been paying the loans back for three years and didn?t have any problem until she began using the website. The site accepted the payments and took the money out of her account, but didn?t apply the money to her debt.
Instead, she has to call each month to keep the account from going into arrears, she said.
?They acknowledge they have my money,? she said.
Mercer said representatives told her a massive backlog on the website was causing the problems, giving her 50 business days until it?s fixed ? then 60. Then, she said, they stopped giving her estimates.
?It?s been five months and they haven?t caught up yet,? she said.
The problem likely stems from two-year-old legislation, David said. He said universities used to choose to finance student debt either through federal or private loans.
But as part of student loan reform, the federal government began financing all student loans, he said. Some of the former lenders took positions as private contractors managing the loans, he said.
?They?re trying to consolidate all the different loans. It?s a huge volume to try to coordinate,? he said. ?If you put too much water into a dam or pipe, it?s going to slow it down or burst.?
Mercer said she?s called 24 times. A service representative promised a follow-up letter would be sent within 10 days to explain the issue.
Twenty days later, the hadn?t arrived, she said.
Eventually, it became impossible to reach anyone during the day, Mercer said, and she resorted to calling around 6 a.m. to ensure she got through. The website still wasn?t applying her payments.
?If this were a business they would have been sued,? she said.
David said the Department of Education has contracted six centers around the country devoted to handling loan payments.
Mercer said she thinks that privatizing the process gummed up the works. David said that while the financial aid offices at schools don?t handle student loan repayments, they can help people who are struggling to reach the Department of Education.
Mercer said she spoke with the Internal Revenue Service about how her taxes would be affected, and that agency directed her to a volunteer ombudsman.
Mercer said the ombudsman has been helping her during March, she said. On Friday, the ombudsman called her and said the problem has been taken care of.
But earlier the same week, she?d run into trouble trying to take care of another missing payment.
?I called again on Tuesday, my day off. The first time I waited on hold,? she said. After a representative picked up, he put her on hold. ?After another five minutes, he hung up on me. I called back, when they answered the phone, they hung up on me.

Doctors at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have shown that a new drug makes chemotherapy more effective in treating acute myeloid leukemia, a cancer of the white blood cells. Instead of attacking these cells directly, the drug helps drive them out of the bone marrow and into the bloodstream, where they are more vulnerable to chemotherapy.
"We're usually very good at clearing these leukemia cells from the blood," says Geoffrey L. Uy, MD, assistant professor of medicine and co-first author on the study published in the journal Blood. "But it's much harder to clear these cancerous cells from the bone marrow."
This combined phase 1 and 2 clinical trial included 52 patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) who had relapsed or whose AML was resistant to the standard chemotherapy regimen. In the phase 2 portion with 46 patients, all received the investigational drug, and 46 percent achieved complete remission, meaning no evidence of cancer could be found in the blood or bone marrow after treatment.
"In general, we see complete remission rates between 20 and 30 percent," says Uy, who treats patients at the Alivn J. Siteman Cancer Center at Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital. "But a lot depends on individual patient characteristics."
Indeed, recent genetic studies have shown that mutations leading to AML may differ greatly among patients. But regardless of individual mutations, all of these leukemia cells rely in some way on the protective effects of the bone marrow, according to senior author John F. DiPersio, MD, PhD, the Virginia E. and Sam J. Golman Professor of Medicine.
"With DNA sequencing identifying so many mutations that are unique to one patient, it may be very hard to find therapies that work directly on the cancer," says DiPersio, who also treats patients at the Siteman Cancer Center. "Instead, we are targeting a common pathway that all leukemic cells are addicted to ? in this case, the relatively normal environment of the bone marrow."
DiPersio calls the results of this study encouraging and worthy of additional exploration.
"If these results are repeated in a larger study, it would be transformative," he says. "It would change the standard way we treat these patients ? we would use this approach with everybody. In addition, the approach of targeting the tumor microenvironment could also be exploited for the treatment of other hematologic and solid tumor malignancies."
Bone marrow protects leukemia cells by inhibiting the cell-suicide response that might otherwise lead AML cells to self-destruct. Although leukemia cells in the bone marrow do not rapidly divide, their stability makes them very resistant to treatment. And while chemotherapy can clear the bloodstream of leukemia for a period of time, these "protected" cells in the bone marrow may cause the cancer to return.
The drug used in this study, called plerixafor, blocks the leukemia cells from attaching to the bone marrow. Released from their protective environment into the bloodstream, the cells lose the bone marrow's survival signals and begin to divide. Rapidly dividing cells are more sensitive to chemotherapy.
Plerixafor received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2008 for use prior to a stem cell transplant to treat patients with two other types of blood cancers: multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. In these diseases, plerixafor is used to dislodge normal stem cells from the bone marrow. Once in the bloodstream, those stem cells can then be collected for a transplant. Returning the patient's own stem cells after aggressive chemotherapy is a standard treatment for these two cancers.
"We helped in plerixafor's development for stem cell mobilization," DiPersio says. "So we thought if it makes normal stem cells leave the bone marrow to circulate, maybe it would do the same with leukemic cells."
In 2009, DiPersio and his colleagues showed that this concept worked in mice with a form of AML. Mice treated with plerixafor plus chemotherapy had improved survival over mice treated with chemotherapy alone. But DiPersio says plerixafor targets only one of many tethers anchoring these cells to the bone marrow.
"This is one of the first clinical examples of targeting the environment that leukemia cells live in," DiPersio says. "In the future, we may find other drugs, or combinations of drugs, that work better. There are now a number of groups around the world putting together similar approaches."

It started firing up again so the doctor put me on a 4 week program of physical therapy. They say its ok there to do the exercises but by the time I am done I am completely exhausted, sometimes dizzy and nauseous. The other day when I finished I started feeling a little bit of cramping does anyone think I may be doing too much? I do 10 min on a bike type thing its like your climbing the stairs sitting down then I have to push 80lbs with my legs 2 reps of 20, then the stretches im ok with but its those 2 things at the beginning of my therapy that really wear me down.

The technological divide between the rulers and the ruled is at the heart of "The Hunger Games": While the good guys struggle to survive, the bad guys employ fictional gee-whiz technologies inspired by real-life frontiers. And just as in real life, technology gets tripped up by unintended consequences.
That's not to say the post-apocalyptic North America of the book series and the much-anticipated movie, opening Friday, is anything close to real life. On one level, the technologies used by the villainous government of the nation known as Panem, ranging from force fields to extreme genetic engineering, serve as science-fiction plot devices and special effects. But on another level, the contrast between bows and arrows on one side, and death-dealing hovercraft on the other, accentuates the saga's David vs. Goliath angle ? or, in this case, Katniss vs. the Capitol.
Here are a few of the technological trends that provide the twists in "The Hunger Games," along with real-world analogs:
What? No cellphones? Much has been made of the fact that the starving, downtrodden residents of Panem's districts don't seem to have access to cellphones or the Internet. Instead, they have to huddle around giant television sets to find out what their overlords in the Capitol want them to see. But if you think of Panem as a fictional tweak of modern-day North Korea, "The Hunger Games" might not be that far off the mark: You've got a leadership capable of long-range missile launches, exercising virtually total control over what its impoverished populace sees and hears. Cellphones were outlawed until 2008, and even today they're confiscated from international visitors upon arrival. Internet access and international calling are limited to the elite.
The outlook for change is mixed: Today, a million North Koreans are said to be using mobile phones, but the State Department's Alec Ross told the Korea Times during a recent visit to Seoul that "it will be very difficult for technology to drive change in North Korea, given the extreme measures that North Korea has taken to create a media blackout." That's life in Panem ... er, Pyongyang.
Genetic engineering The most vivid special effects are connected to genetic engineering of various organisms, including humanized animals. To minimize the plot-spoiler effect, the only "muttation" I'll mention in detail is the mockingjay, which figures so prominently in the advance publicity and provides the title for the third book in Suzanne Collins' "Hunger Games" trilogy. The geniuses at the Panem high command created genetically modified birds known as jabberjays that were able to listen in on rebel conversations and report them back to the authorities. When the rebels caught onto this, they started feeding the jays false information. And when the Capitol figured this out, they left the jabberjays to fend for themselves. Male jabberjays mated with female mockingbirds, resulting in birds that could learn and repeat musical notes but not human speech.
The twist illustrates a time-honored movie maxim about genetic engineering, enunciated in the first "Jurassic Park" film: "Life will not be contained." That may be putting it too simply, but the field has certainly raised a lot of questions about how to keep genetic genies in the bottle. This month, more than 100 groups issued a call to hold back on synthetic biology until new guidelines are drawn up.
Cross-species splicing is becoming more common: Jellyfish genes have been used to give a glow to mice and pigs. Other types of transgenic cloning have made cats and dogs glow in the dark. Experimental mice have been given a "humanized" version of a gene linked to speech, and there have been humanized sheep and cows as well. These real-life muttations aren't as scary as the tracker jackers, but the movie's genetic-engineering nightmares definitely strike closer to home than, say, vampire nightmares.
Force fields When competitors fight each other in the Hunger Games, the arena is surrounded by some kind of force field to keep Katniss and the other kids from escaping. The invisible fence pushes back anyone or anything that's thrown against it. In real life, researchers have looked into building up short-lasting but powerful electromagnetic fields to repel projectiles directed against military vehicles, but they haven't yet reached the stage where a commander could truly issue the order to raise shields.
It's more realistic to expect that future spaceship captains will use electromagnetic fields to protect their crews from interplanetary radiation blasts. One such study is being funded at Johnson Space Center as part of the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts program.
For years, the U.S. military has been looking into another type of force field, known as the Active Denial System or "pain ray." This non-lethal system can direct a beam of millimeter-wave radiation at a crowd, producing an extreme burning sensation on the skin. The heat ray's victims instinctively back away from wherever they're standing to get out of the beam. Wired.com's Spencer Ackerman was among a group of guinea pigs ... er, guests ... who got a taste of the pain ray during a recent demonstration at the Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia.

Ackerman's conclusion was that the system isn't anywhere near ready for prime time yet, due to lingering concerns about health effects, plus the hours-long buildup time for the beam generator, plus the fact that the system doesn't really work that well under dusty, rainy or snowy conditions. Bottom line: It might be a while before the odds are ever in the pain ray's favor.
Hovercraft The "Hunger Games" aerial hovercraft are like helicopters, only spookier. They transport cargo as well as people, and can be used for combat and covert operations as well. A real-life hovercraft might be something like the fan-driven vehicles that Moller International has been working on for decades, or a scaled-up version of the Martin Jetpack. Or who knows? Maybe the Capitol has perfected the superconducting anti-gravity effect that NASA looked into more than a decade ago. (Interest waned when it turned out that the Podkletnov Effect couldn't be reliably reproduced.)?
Surveillance society The biggest shadow looming over Katniss and the other denizens of the Districts is constant surveillance. That's what the Hunger Games are all about: a reality-TV fight to the death, on the air 24/7, complete with sponsors and wagering. It's a popular concept in fiction, popping up in films such as "The Running Man," "Battle Royale" and "Series 7."
The Capitol's surveillance isn't limited to the games, however. Just as the contestants are being monitored inside the arena, Panem's citizens have to assume they're being monitored on the outside. In real life, meanwhile, tens of millions of surveillance cameras are being installed across the United States, and there's talk about giving domestic duties to camera-carrying robo-planes.
